Online dues payments are the one premium feature a Free Plan community can switch on for itself. Turn it on and the payments screens go live on the web and in the mobile app, so checks stop arriving in a board member's mailbox.
Nothing about your free portal changes
The Free Plan is still $0 with the same 300-unit and 1 GB limits. Residents pay Stripe's processing cost at checkout, and dues are collected through your community's own Stripe account.
Off until you turn it on
An admin switches online payments on in settings and finishes a short Stripe verification. Leave it off and the free portal stays exactly as it is.
Card or bank transfer
Residents pay Stripe's live processing cost at checkout—cards 2.9% + $0.30 and ACH 0.8%, capped at $5.00—so collecting dues still costs the community $0.
Paid from the couch
Neighbors see their balance and pay on the web or in the HeyNeighbor mobile app, and your payments dashboard shows what was collected and transferred.

Is there a free document portal for an HOA?
Yes. HeyNeighbor gives each eligible owner one standalone Free Community Document Portal for a community with up to 300 homes or units, with 1 GB of document storage and resident access on web and mobile.
What is included in the Free Community Document Portal?
The Free Plan includes document browsing, search, preview, download, web-based upload and management, folders and categories, document permissions, approvals, document notifications, member administration, basic settings, and billing access. Administrators can also optionally turn on online dues payments so residents can pay on the web or in the mobile app.
How much document storage is included?
Each Free Community Document Portal includes 1 GB, or 1,073,741,824 bytes, of aggregate document storage. Each individual file may be up to 100 MB, or 104,857,600 bytes.
Can residents access community documents on mobile?
Yes. Authorized residents can browse, preview, download, and use their device sharing options for community documents in the mobile app. Document upload and management are currently available on the web.
Do I need a credit card to start?
Yes. A credit card is required in Stripe when you create your community and begin the 60-day full-feature trial. Unless an administrator chooses the Free Plan during the final 14 days, the paid subscription begins and the saved card is charged when the trial ends.
Is there a unit limit during the trial?
No. The 60-day full-feature trial has no unit limit. The Free Plan supports up to 300 homes or units after the trial. If a trial ends above 300 units, existing units remain available in the documents-only portal, but additional units are blocked until the community returns to 300 units or fewer or upgrades.
What happens after the 60-day trial?
Starting 14 days before the trial ends, an administrator can continue with the paid plan or choose the documents-only Free Plan. If no choice is made, the paid subscription begins automatically using the card entered at sign-up. Communities that choose Free keep their private document portal while AI chat and other premium features become restricted.
Does the Free Plan expire?
The current Free Plan has no scheduled expiration. An eligible community can choose the $0 documents-only plan during the final 14 days of its trial or after ending a paid subscription. HeyNeighbor may change the plan’s eligibility, features, limits, or availability with notice as described in the Terms.
Can residents pay dues online on the Free Plan?
Yes, if an administrator turns it on. Online dues payments are an optional feature of the Free Plan: once payments are enabled and Stripe verification is complete, residents can pay by card or bank transfer from the web portal or the mobile app, and administrators can track collections from the payments dashboard. Residents pay Stripe’s live processing cost at checkout, so enabling it does not change the community’s $0 price.
Is AI chat included in the Free Plan?
AI chat and AI document processing are available during the 60-day full-feature trial but are not included in the Free Plan. They become available again after a paid upgrade.
Can one owner create multiple free communities?
Yes. An owner who manages several associations can run a standalone Free Plan community for each one, and every community keeps its own units, storage, and documents. Each community still starts with its own card-backed 60-day trial, and organization-managed communities are paid-only.
Are public document links included?
No. The Free Plan keeps documents inside the private community portal. Public document links and public-page document exposure require full access.
Can the community upgrade later?
Yes. A community can upgrade to restore AI chat, messaging, events, meetings, voting, forms, and the rest of the HeyNeighbor engagement platform.
